I recently noticed that my Himalayan salt lamp was leaking water and it got me wondering, is this normal? And should I do anything about it? Keep reading to find out the answers to these questions and more!
Yes, it is perfectly normal for your salt lamp to leak water. It occurs due to the natural properties of salt lamps. Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it draws in moisture from the air. For this reason if you leave a salt lamp anywhere, especially out in the open or in humid environments, water from the air will collect some condensation on its exterior, and then slowly evaporate into your air. When it begins to condense, water will drip to the base hence the terms crying, melting, shedding and leaking.
If you’re concerned about your salt lamp sweating, remember that is actually a sign of authenticity. The real concern is if it never sweats!

First off, simply wipe up any pools of water that have accumulated under your lamp with a dry cloth.
We recommend reading our blog "How to care for your Himalayan salt lamp" for detailed information on salt lamp cleaning and maintenance.
Avoid places where there is clearly going to be more moisture than normal, because that’s where your lamp will draw in the most moisture. Here’s some places you probably should not place your lamp if you want to avoid excessive leaking:
- bathrooms (steam from the showers)
- laundry rooms
- next to an open window
- next to a humidifier
- in direct sunlight (you can put it outside on a covered porch, but don’t leave it there for long periods of time)
- anywhere else where there is plenty of moisture nearby.
If you place your lamp in these places, it may be especially prone to leaking water. However, if you place your lamp somewhere like an office or your bedroom that gets very little moisture, it shouldn’t cause any leakage.
Salt is Hygroscopic which means it absorbs moisture. Salt Lamps absorb humidity moisture from the air, and when they are turned off they can shed, melt, leak or “cry” especially if the weather is quite humid or if you live close to the beach or a lake.
To prevent your salt lamp from leaking water, you must keep it on and you must keep it warm. Keep your lamp on for as much of the day as possible. 24/7 is ideal. If you need to have it turned off for a long period of time, please wrap in a plastic bag or cling wrap to prevent weeping. Or leave on a plate.
Just remember that a crying salt lamp is not only normal but also a sign your salt lamp is authentic and can be avoided easily with some minimal care and maintenance.
